When I was a little kid, I always look forward to the ice-cream man with the ringing chimes at my housing area. I still remember a single scoop cone was only 20 cents back then. Nowadays, we are spoil with premium choices ranging from Ben & Jerry, Baskin Robbins to Häagen-Dazs. Though these brands are not cheap, the taste is really irresistible.

When I saw iscream at Tropicana City a while back, I was curious to see how their ice-cream fares.

Apparently, their ice-cream is locally made but rest assured, the quality is on par with some of the better brands out there.

I can’t remember which flavour I choose (apart from the obvious chocolate flavour) but I enjoyed eating them.

The junior scoop costs RM 3.50 which is also quite reasonable.

If you happened to be around Tropicana City (and an ice-cream lover), give this place a try.

Delicious Nyonya @ Tropicana City Mall

There was a new restaurant recently opened at Tropicana City Mall called Delicious Nyonya. It is apparently owned by the Tai Thong Group which has a whole range of other F&B outlets such as San Francisco Steakhouse, Royal Thai, Room Eighteen, Bad Ass Coffee and etc.

Nyonya cuisine is synonymous to delicious food since its history traces back to the days where early Chinese settlement from China weds local Malay folks. As a result, the first generation of mixed Chinese-Malays were known as Peranakan (male being known as Baba while female as Nyonya). Consequently, nyonya food is a fusion of the Malay and Chinese style cooking style.

I had high hopes when I walked into Delicious Nyonya that day for lunch with my colleagues. The restaurant is spacious and bright while the furnishing is reminicient of the Baba Nyonya style restaurant.

Food however was a mixed bag. I ordered the nasi lemak which was recommended by the waiter.

It was ok as far as the taste is concern. As usual, the dish came with some Acar and ikan bilis.

Oh apart from ala carte meals, they also sell Nyonya Kuih. Kuih Seri Muka is commonly seen everywhere.

This is called Kuih Ketayap which has coconut fillings wrapped with green pancake skin.

Pulut panggang is another crowd favourite.

The Asam Fish was a disappointment. My colleague told me that it tasted raw or uncooked. When we raised this up with the waiter, we were told that the fish that they used (ikan Tenggiri) has that natural smell / taste in them.

However, we didn’t buy the story and they promptly swapped it with Nyonya Curry Chicken. This one actually fared better and I like it although my colleague said that the ‘santan’ (coconut milk) taste was very heavy.

Similarly, the Nyonya Laksa shared the same comment.

Some of the food came with side dishes such as this small bowl of Acar and mixed vegetables.

As for dessert, they threw in a bowl of green bean dessert soup. I find it too sweet for my taste.

Overall, I wouldn’t recommend this place as I have tasted much better Peranakan food elsewhere. Perhaps, we were there on the wrong day when the food somehow weren’t that great.

Room Eighteen @ Tropicana City Mall

Room Eighteen is a newly opened restaurant by Tai Thong group at Tropicana City Mall in Petaling Jaya. Those that love Chinese cuisine should give this place a try as the food is pretty good. I had a chance to try their food last Saturday while walking around the mall.

The interior looks very contemporary for a Chinese restaurant.

For appetizer, they serve us with a bowl of crackers with sweet sour sauce and toufu with rojak sauce. Overall both of them tasted alright and helped to fill our stomach before the main dishes arrive. My only complain is that it costs RM 6 for the appetizer which is not cheap.

There is a set lunch promotion going on at the moment where each set meal costs around RM 12+. However, customers can’t choose which meal they would like to have as they have only two choices of set lunch dishes every day. However, we were lucky as they have prawn dumpling noodles on Saturday. The dumplings were quite big while the skin is amazingly thin. I guess it takes a pair of skillful hands to wrap the skin flour around the fillings. You can almost see the content of the dumplings since the skin is semi transparent.

They even thrown in a cup of mango pudding as part of the set lunch menu.

I tried the steam rib rice which comes highly recommended by the waiter. It is also in the set lunch menu but only for Tuesday (if I remember correctly). Anyway, I decided to order this despite not having a free drink that comes with a set menu. Despite that, I have no regret at all. The rice was soft while the steam ribs are very flavoursome. I think the ribs were marinated before steaming it, hence the yummy taste.

While I didn’t get a chance to try the other stuff, I figured the restaurant must be quite popular judging by the Saturday afternoon crowd. Those who loves Chinese food should give this place a try.
