Aunty Gemuk’s Char Kuey Teow @ Kelana Jaya

Affectionately known as Aunty Gemuk (Fat Aunty), I guess her physical appearance says it all. I stumbled across this place after reading a lot of positive reviews in the blogsphere, praising about her mouth watering plate of Char Kuey Teow. As a food lover myself, I knew it is a matter of time before I drop by at her stall to try her famous fried noodle.

Aunty Gemuk’s Char Kuey Teow is found at Restoran Jamal Mohamed, facing the entrance of Wisma FAM. Located at the intersection of Jalan SS51/12 and Jalan SS51/9, the restaurant was super-packed during lunch hours. Despite the crowd, it wasn’t hard to spot her stall given her plump appearance. Numerous customers were seen queuing up beside her stall while most tables were already filled with her signature fried noodles – a sure sign of her popularity. One of the unique thing about Restoran Jamal Mohamed is that its sellers are made up of various races congregating under one roof. Without doubt, the spirit of 1 Malaysia is alive and well here.

The Char Kuey Teow came in a big clump of reddish-like noodles with prawns, cockles, bean sprout and eggs embedded inside. While food presentation may not be Aunty Gemuk’s forte, the taste was a different story altogether.

I must say, the service was very efficient. Despite so many orders coming in, my big plate of Char Kuey Teow (RM 4.50) arrived swiftly. I guess Aunty Gemuk has mastered the art of frying noodles so proficiently that each plate of pipping hot fried noodle is served from the wok in no time at all.

The Char Kuey Teow wasn’t very oily which was a good thing. Despite so, the individual strands of noodles were moist and well-fried. It was as if Aunty Gemuk has truly acquired the fine art of cooking Char Kuey Teow with a perfect balance of ingredients, heat and frying time.

One other unique character that I noticed in Aunty Gemuk’s Char Kuey Teow is the absence of dark soya sauce. Instead of the usual dark brownish texture on most Char Kuey Teow, here, the noodles were of slight reddish tones from what I presumed to be the use of belacan or shrimp paste.

It was also slightly spicier compared to the usual Char Kuey Teow that I have tried elsewhere. The noodles were still hot even after spending a few minutes taking pictures which is an indication of ‘Wok Hei’ or what is commonly referred to as charred taste as a result of frying the kuey teow with intense heat.

Selling Char Kuey Teow in a Muslim mamak shop means that no pork lard or pork sausages are allowed to maintain the ‘Halal’ status. Despite the absence of these two ingredients, I didn’t find it detrimental to the taste at all.

Suffice to say, Aunty Gemuk’s Char Kuey Teow warrants two thumbs up. The taste is delicious and I finished my big plate in no time at all. Her fried Char Kuey Teow has won my heart and it is ranked as one of the best I had tasted so far.

For your information, Aunty Gemuk is a very friendly person. When I asked if I can take a picture of her frying noodles, she smiled and said “Okay!”

Truly a gem not to be missed. She open daily till 8 p.m. – 9 p.m. Sunday till 4 p.m. only.

Fruit Rojak & Char Kuey Teow at Kedai Makanan Seng Lee

Mention fruit rojak and the mixture of fruits with dark shrimp paste will definitely come into the mind. Personally, I was never really fond of fruit rojak since it practically tastes the same everywhere. However, my perception of this dish quickly changed when I tried the fruit rojak stall in front of Kedai Makanan Seng Lee at Jalan Batai, Damansara Heights.

The stall is operated by a couple who have been there for many years.

The long line of customers was a sure sign that their rojak is noteworthy. I ordered a plate (RM 5) which comes with cucumber, pineapple, papaya, water chestnut, raw mangoes and etc.

What makes their fruit rojak different is the generous amount of crushed peanuts and more importantly, the awesome taste of the shrimp paste. The paste was thick, rich with taste and delicious. I can’t begin to describe how wonderful it was.

The inclusion of you tiao was also something that I like. You can have either the crispy version of the soft version.

The prawn crackers was also crispy and nice. Trust me, a plate of this fruit rojak is enough to fill the stomach. Highly recommended.

The Char Kuey Teow (RM 5) at Seng Lee was also good. It is more moist compared to most of the Char Kuey Teow that I had tried.

The colour of the noodles are also much lighter as compared to the usual dark brown.

It does take some skills to whipped up a good plate of Char Kuey Teow and in this case, the uncle who fried them does it very well indeed. The noodles were not greasy and has a slight tinge of spicy taste in it.

If you happened to be around Damansara Heights, do drop by this coffee shop. Kedai Makanan Seng Lee is just situated right at the back of Hock Lee supermarket.

Hawker stalls @ Jalan Kuchai Lama

Food lovers who frequent along Old Klang Road must have come across this wonderful row of hawker stalls in front of Wisma FGA along Jalan Kuchai Lama. These hawker stalls are opened in the evening and it is not unusual to see people crowding the area by 6:30 p.m.

What makes this place so popular is the tasty food that are sold there. Cao Cao Lamb is probably one of the best known stall there. While I have no idea how long it has been there, the old lady who is running it has a knack of barbecuing lips smacking BBQ lamb. Beside that, they also sell BBQ chicken wing which is equally good as well. The skin is nice and crispy while the meat is moist.

Besides that, there is a stall selling tong sui. I took the longan with sea coconut. The taste was just right. Not too sweet and not too bland either.

Customers will also spot a peculiar prawn mee stall called ‘Ha! Ha! Har Mee’ which presumably is a marketing gimmick to catch people’s attention.

Putting marketing aside, the prawn mee was worth ordering. The prawns were of reasonable size while the the soup has a rich aroma.

Lastly, we also took the fried kuey teow. Unlike the usual ones, this particular stall uses duck egg instead of chicken egg to fry with the noodles.

As a result, the char kuey teow has a distinctive salty taste to it. It was very delicious and the long queue of customers was a clear indication of its popularity.

The best way to look for this row of hawkers is to find Wisma FGA. They are just along the roadside as you turn in from Old Klang Road.

Food Republic @ Pavilion

I have heard so much about Food Republic before this but never got a chance to try it until today. Apparently, Food Republic is a modern food court concept originated from Singapore. I guess we are lucky to have the similar one here as well at Pavilion, Kuala Lumpur. There were many stalls available and I must say all of them look pretty appetizing.

I decided to try out Thye Hong’s famous fried prawn noodles (RM 7++) which came highly recommended by one of their staff there. The first thing I noticed was the texture of the noodles which is similar to those used in Asam Laksa. There were some gravy too which tasted quite alright. The prawns were fresh and flavoursome. After reading some Internet reviews, I just came to know that it is quite a well known in Singapore.

We also tried their Char Kuey Teow (RM 7++) . I have tasted numerous version of this famous dish and I must say this one is pretty good too. The cockles were pretty fresh and there was slight spicy taste to it.

I am also a big fan of chicken rice and when I stumbled across Sargent Singapore Chicken Rice, I knew I had to give this a try. The steam chicken was really smooth and soft. I must say that it is very well prepared and ranks among the best chicken rice I have tried so far.For RM 8, it is really worth the money.
