MSS 2011 Day 3: Fun & Adventure @ Awana Genting Highlands Golf & Country Resort

9 10 2011

Right after our brefing, our Eco Challenge Chief, Mr. Zul led us to the forest for our first activity. We were told that we would be performing abseiling or rappelling where participants would need to decent down on a 45 degrees wooden platform using a rope. Cool!

Suddenly I feel like I am in an espionage role for one of those Mission Impossible movies. Though I had been involved in numerous team building activities in the past, it was the first time I tried abseiling. Hats off to Awana Genting Highlands Golf & Country Resort for introducing such a unique outdoor activity for the bloggers.

While it may look frightening at first, the team of marshals were there to brief us on the safety procedures and teaching us the proper technique to hold the rope and using our body weight to decent down the wooden platform.

The marshals were all very friendly and helpful. After trying the abseiling myself, I find it really fun. And best of all, it wasn’t difficult to walk down the platform with the safety harness attached to our body. After having our first go, we have to perform the same act but this time, our body was facing forward.

All in all, it was great fun and all the bloggers managed to complete the task.

Besides abseiling, Awana Genting Highlands Golf & Country Resort also offer other activities such as rock climbing, flying fox and eco trail.

MSS 2011 Day 3: Hilltop Adventures @ Awana Genting Highlands Golf & Country Resort

9 10 2011

Our next destination was Awana Genting Highlands Golf & Country Resort which is perched 3,000 feet above sea level. It is interesting to note that 15% of Genting is actually situated in Selangor (contrary to popular belief that Genting is exclusively a Pahang state tourism spot) and Awana Genting actually lies in the Selangor state.

The warm hospitality from the Awana Genting staff was very evident from the time when we stepped out from our buses at the reception are of Awana Genting. Not only were our luggages promptly taken to our sleeping rooms, we were ushered into the Flavours Café with a welcoming drink.

As we gathered ourselves at the lounge area, I spotted this huge backdrop on the stage depicting the MSS 2011 event.

Dato’ Anthony Yeo, who is the Senior Vice President – Public Relations & Communications gave a welcoming speech shortly after at the cafe. Since the MSS 2011’s theme emphasizes on Eco Tourism, Dato’ made a point that contrary to popular belief that Genting is solely an entertainment park, Genting Awana focuses a lot on nature conservation programs which is in line with eco tourism.

Do you know that Awana Genting has been appointed as a bird conservation area with 745 bird species during migration? In fact, Genting Highlands is also part of an Important Bird Area (IBA) with the international designation, MY10, making it a prime site for birdwatchers and nature lovers alike.

YB Elizabeth Wong (EXCO for Tourism, Environment & Consumer Affairs) was also there to give moral support to our fellow bloggers.

Later we were being ushered into a briefing room where Mr. Mohd. Najib Ariffin (Head of Awana Genting resort’s Fun & Adventure Unit) who heads the Awana Genting outdoor activities gave us a few pointers on the do’s and don‘ts when we enter the jungle later on.

Apparently there are certain ‘rules’ that we need to adhere to when we stepped into the jungle for our safety sake.

Mr. Zul who is the Eco Challenge Chief then gave a brief introduction of himself as he will be leading all the bloggers for the outdoor activities during our 2 days one night stay at Awana Genting.

We had a chance to take a group shot at Awana Genting Highlands Golf & Country Resort before going for our first eco adventure!

MSS 2011 Day 2: Grand Dinner at the Golden Palm Tree Iconic Resort & Spa Grand Ballroom

9 10 2011

The dinner was again an eventful experience with a good selection of food ala buffet style held at the Grand Ballroom. For those who love grilled seafood, Golden Palm Tree Iconic Resort & Spa offers fish, mussles, lala and etc to sink your teeth into.

I also enjoyed the numerous live performances by the team of talented resort staff. We were treated to dances like Rasa Sayang and Kadazan Magunatip Dance. It was really interesting as we get to see how diverse Malaysia culture is with a variety of performances.

The grand ballroom was certainly spacious, offering 840 square-metre and can accommodate up to 1,200 people. The best thing about the ballroom is that there are no pillars thus the stage is unobstructed at any angle.

The ballroom is also ideal for wedding and banquets. To find out more, contact Golden Palm Tree based on the information below.

It was certainly a fun night and we had a group picture on the stage before calling it a night.

Here are some of the other food pictures taken.

MSS 2011 Day 2: Discovering the Amazing Low Tide Kingdom @ Golden Palm Tree Iconic Resort & Spa

9 10 2011

After the enjoyable bicycle tour, we went for another interesting tour but this time around, we had to walk on our feet instead. Aptly called the Low Tide Tour, we set foot towards the sandy beach when the tide is low to learn about the eco life in the low tide kingdom.

While taking a stroll on the beach, I spotted many soldier crab or ‘Geramak’. These crab quickly dug a hole underneath the sand when I came close to them.

The soldier crab also left some pattern sand balls on the beach called sand art while they dug deep into the ground surface. This one caught my eyes as it looks like a palm tree. It is really fascinating looking at these amazing creatures.

While there was a lot of information given by the tour guide such as differentiating between male and female mussels, I was also amazed with the fact that Golden Palm Tree Resort is integrating eco tourism into part of their Escapade Discovery. This includes a mangrove river cruise which is a half day tour enjoying the tropical flora and fauna while cruising on the mangrove river.

We also learned about the formation of corals on the pillars supporting the villas and other interesting facts about mud skippers and etc.

For information on Low Tide Tour at Golden Palm Tree Resort, proceed to the Excursion Counter at the main lobby.

MSS 2011 Day 2: Enjoying the Breezy Afternoon with Bicycle Tour @ Golden Palm Tree Iconic Resort & Spa

9 10 2011

After the scrumptious lunch, we were told that there was another activity arranged for us. This time around, we will be cycling in group outside the resort.

I was initially hesitant to take part as the scorching sun above our heads left me feeling dehydrated quickly. But once our convoy were strapped up with safety helmets and started peddling from the Smiley Beach, I must admit, it is the most pleasurable experience I had the whole day.

I guess the idea of having a group of us touring around Sepang on a bicycle brought out the nostalgic childhood memories in me when I used to own a bicycle as a kid and enjoy cycling around my neighbourhood with my friends.

It was also nice to just take a scenic tour around the rustic villages or kampung areas as it reminds me how simple life can be there as compared to the hustle and bustle city life that we are so accustomed to. Kudos to Golden Palm Tree for coming up with the bicycle tour!

Registration for the bicycle tour can be made at the Excursion Counter at the resort lobby. Here is the daily schedule for the bicycle tour at Golden Palm Tree Resort.

MSS 2011 Day 2: Exploring the Beauty of Paradise at Golden Palm Tree Iconic Resort & Spa

9 10 2011

Right after our morning beach activities, we were given a few hours to rest. I took the opportunity to walk around Golden Palm Tree Resort to admire its exquisite beauty and exotic architecture.

With a unique shape of a palm tree view from atop, Golden Palm Tree Iconic Resort & Spa stretches out to almost a kilometer into the Straits of Malacca revealing the fusion of traditional and modern designs.

With 392 luxurious water villas raised on stilts, alang-alang roofings and private deck with sea view, Golden Palm Tree was the recipient to the CNBC Best Property Award and Best Interior Award back in 2008.

Just a stroll around the resort will evoke a feeling of walking along a landscaped paradise mainly influenced by Polynesian and Maldivian styles with a touch of tropical Malaysian finishing.

The infinity pool located at the Club House is another sight to marvel. The pool is opened from 9:00 a.m. till 8:00 p.m. from Monday to Friday and 9:00 a.m. till 9:00 p.m. on Saturday, Sunday and Public Holiday.

Indeed, this is a 5 star haven of peace and serenity with a scenic view of the coastline that is both majestic and awe inspiring.

MSS 2011 Day 2: Fun under the Sun @ Smiley Beach Golden Palm Tree Iconic Resort & Spa

9 10 2011

For some reason, the beach at Golden Palm Tree Resort is known as Smiley Beach. The first thing I asked myself was why is it called the Smiley Beach?

Perhaps, there are a lot of laughter and fun to be had there and hence the name or it could be the tire tracks left by trucks that forms smiling patterns on the sandy beach.

Whatever it may be, I know that there were definitely a lot of excitement that day. To even make the day even better, Golden Palm Tree was gracious enough to allow us to try out all the activities at the beach for one hour. Awesome!!

Pamela opted for wind surfing while some the other bloggers went kayaking and sailing.

It was a great deal of enjoyment as the bloggers tried to paddle their way into the sea with the waves hitting back at them.

Andi even got cheeky by standing on the kayak and ended up soaking in the water as he couldn’t maintain his balance. His antics certainly got the rest of us laughing.

Here are some of the other candid pictures taken…

The excitement didn’t stop thereas a group of bloggers got down and dirty on the sand by playing beach volley ball.

There were certainly a lot of interactions among the bloggers as they worked hand in hand to gain points for their team.

But in the end, it is not so much on which who actually won but rather the fun that everyone had in enjoying the game.

After getting ourselves soaked under the sun (not to mentioned getting wet in the sea), it was time to take a well deserved rest.

For those people who love water activities, there are certainly a lot of varieties at Golden Palm Resort.

For your information, Smiley Beach offers sailing, kayaking, stand up paddle, windsurfing, cart sailing, speed sail, bocce ball, beach football, beach volleyball, sepak takraw, stretching, ping pong and darts.

The beach is open from 9:30 a.m. till 6:00 p.m.
