Wantan Mee @ Old Klang Road

27 03 2011

One of the quirky thing about Malaysia food is that the best food are often found at run down places. A good example would be this particular Wantan noodle stall which is located along Old Klang Road. From afar, the stall will not appeal those who are looking for a comfortable and hygiene place to dine. But the place is crowded just about every night which is a tell tale sign of the popularity of this stall.

I have never been an ardent fan of Char Siew (barbecued pork) until I tasted Meng Kee Char Siew. That is when I started paying more attention to the barbecued pork served whenever I order Wanton noodle. Suffice to say, the barbecued pork at this place was really appetizing (and I dare say, one of the better ones I have eaten so far).

My recommendation is to order the “pun fei sau” (50% fat 50% lean) meat. The soft fatty texture blends very nicely with the lean meat which will most certainly delight your taste bud.

A small plate costs (RM 5.50) which is cheap considering that this is one of the better char siew I have tried. The outer layer is nicely barbecued without overly burnt. The char siew was flavoursome enough to be eaten without the noodle!

And speaking about the noodle, the Wantan mee  (RM 4.50) was also good. I notice that the stall owner prepare each plate of wanton mee individually (even during peak hours) to ensure that the taste is consistent.

The noodle was springy and does not have that ‘kan sui’ (alkaline water) smell. The sauce was thick and black and had enough taste to it.

And of course, the char siew which came with the noodle made it ever tastier!

The Wantan (dumplings) were also good.

The skin was thin and the combination of shrimp and pork meat in its fillings (although the pepper taste was slightly stronger) made it pretty decent enough.

If you are looking for a place to eat good Wantan noodle, do stop by this place. It is located opposite of BHP petrol station. There is also a ‘tai chow’ stall at the same place. Highly recommended.

Thong Hsing @ Tanjung Sepat

22 03 2011

Tanjung Sepat is a fishing village just off Morib town. The place reminds me of the rustic ‘kampung’ back in the old days. One of the attraction of Tanjung Sepat is Thong Hsing fishball and yong tau foo factory. The factory is located inside a wooden house which has many workers skillfully wrapping dumpling skin with fish fillet with their hands. Here is one of the picture of the little dumplings lined up on the tray.

Jojo Kitchen @ Kuchai Lama

While searching for a nice place to eat pan mee (flat flour noodle), I came across Jojo Little Kitchen which received positive reviews across numerous food blogs.

There were a variety of pan mee served at Jojo Little Kitchen. I ordered the dry pork pan mee (RM 6.50) which came with strips of black fungus, fried anchovies, minced pork, sweet leaves and fried shallots.

The appeal of pan mee lies with the smooth noodle mixed with the crunchiness of anchovies with the savory taste of mince pork.

In this sense, Jojo Little Kitchen’s dry pork pan mee was certainly tasty.

Once all the ingredients were mixed up with the noodle, a bowl of delicious pan mee was waiting for me to feast on.

While not the best I have tasted, it was certainly good enough to warrant a second visit.

The traditional soup pan mee (RM 6.00) was equally good.

The soup was rich with pork taste which I believe was prepared differently compared to the usual pan mee soup which is cooked primarily with anchovies.

The noodles were springy, the pork was also sweet but the serving was a slightly small.

Overall, I was satisfied with the quality of food at Jojo Little Kitchen. Although comparatively more expensive than coffee shops, the quick service and air-conditioned environment do make up for the steeper price to pay for the food at Jojo Little Kitchen.

MonsterBites @ Jaya One, Petaling Jaya

19 03 2011

I had a chance to try out the sandwich at MonsterBite recently. Monster Bite is a little kiosk located next to entrance of Cold Storage at Jaya One. The kiosk is decorated with all sorts of cartoons presumably their mascot which attracted passerby to take a second look.

MonsterBites prides itself for serving healthy food which are equally delicious. True to its claim, I found their Monster Classico with Turkey Ham (RM 8.80) lived up to its reputation.

Honestly, I am not a big fan of sandwich but the Monster Classico got me hooked! The ingredients were fresh and appetizing. The sandwich reminds me of the goodness of a home made sandwich with plenty of yummy-ness inside.

If I want to go for a sandwich next time, I will definitely give MonsterBite a go.

Meng Kee Char Siew @ Glenmarie

15 03 2011

I have blogged about the fabulous Char Siew (barbecued pork) at Meng Kee before this so I am not going to write much about it here. Suffice to say, their Char Siew is still one of the best I have tasted so far. Too bad their roast chicken pales in comparison. Nevertheless, if you are a fan of barbecued pork, make sure you drop by this place for some succulent tasty char siew!

La Cucur @ Suria KLCC

12 03 2011

One early morning, I was walking around Suria KLCC looking for a nice breakfast meal. That is when I stumbled across La Cucur which is  located at the concourse level of the shopping mall. As far as I know, La Cucur has been around for a long time and has build quite a steady reputation over the years. I ordered their nasi lemak chicken which costs RM 8.50 per plate. The dish came with roasted peanuts, anchovies as well as sambal.

The sambal has a bit of sourish tangy taste to it. Personally, I prefer sambal to have a slight sweet spicy taste but that is just my own preference.

The rice must also be firm and not sticky. The one at La Cucur was not too bad though I have tasted a better version at Village Park, Damansara Uptown. The highlight of the dish was the chicken rendang.

The chicken meat was tender and cooked with sufficient spices and other condiments.

If only the sambal and the rice was prepared to my liking I would definitely give this place a thumbs up.

Pizzeria Bella Italia @ SS2 Petaling Jaya

8 03 2011

Nowadays, it is pretty hard press to find value for money set lunch. Hence, when I found out that Pizzeria Bella Italia is offering their set meals from RM 9.90 onwards, I was more than eager to try it out. Pizzeria Bella Italia has been around in SS2 for a long time. The funny thing is that I never actually stepped into this restaurant until I was told that the food is really good there.

The Margarita pizza that came with the set meal was served on a round wooden board.

The thin crust (which is how a real pizza should be prepared) and the light toppings tasted really good.

The cheesy texture was more than enough to make me smile. For RM 9.90, this is one of the best lunch deal around.

The classic spaghetti was equally delicious. Cooked with olive and slice chilies , the meal was simply good.

And for the price (RM 9.90), there is really nothing that I can fault about it.

Each set meal came with a bowl of mushroom soup and a piece of bread. The soup tasted pretty decent and did not have the floury texture offered at some other restauraunts.

Pizzeria Bella Italia is one of those restaurant that offers great food at a cheap price. Truly a rare gem in the neighbourhood of Petaling Jaya.

Uncle Seng Restaurant @ Subang Jaya

3 03 2011

Having heard so much about the famous handmade noodle at Uncle Seng Restaurant, I managed to try it out a few months ago. What makes Uncle Seng’s noodle special is that apart from being hand made, the noodles are cooked without any ‘black sauce’. Hence, if you order a plate of Char Siew Wanton noodle, you will definitely see the texture of the noodle in its original colour.

The place was crowded during Sunday morning and it is easy to see why as Uncle Seng is very well know among food lovers. While the noodle comes with a choice of curry chicken, chicken feet mushroom, shredded chicken, deep fried pork and etc, I chose the Char Siew Wanton which costs RM 5.50 for a large portion.

The char siew wasn’t the best I have tried so far but I like the way it was prepared at Uncle Seng – plain and simple. The wanton also tasted as how I expected it to be.

The highlight was the noodle of course. It has a thicker texture and you can tell that it was freshly made. Overall, the dish as a light and natural taste to it. The absence of black sauce does not detriment the taste at all!

Personally, I like the noodle at Uncle Seng. As I have mentioned before, the number of people eating there is an indication of how popular the place is.
