Paramount Garden Restaurant @ Petaling Jaya

30 11 2010

When I first heard about Loh Pan Mee at Paramount Garden Restaurant, I was quite skeptical as to how it would turned out to be. You see, most people including yours truly are accustomed to the normal Pan Mee version which comes in either soup based or dry (Kon Lou) style. But when Pan Mee is cooked with thick brown gravy, ala Loh Mee style, I just had to see how it would taste like.

Beside the Loh Mee style, I was also surprised to hear that the Pan Mee at Paramount Garden Restaurant comes in two variants, namely the normal version or the Spinach Pan Mee. The spinach Pan Mee can be easily identified with its green texture. The waiter recommended me to mix both type of noodles.

The Loh Pan Mee (RM 4.80 for medium size) doesn’t have the usual ingredients such as anchovies, black fungus or mushroom. Instead, those stuff are substituted with prawns, pork and fried foo chuk.

You can clearly see the combination of normal and spinach based noodle by its colour. Overall, the taste was acceptable although I still prefer the traditional Pan Mee.

And speaking of that, their normal Pan Mee (RM 4.30 for small) was pretty tasty.

Dried anchovies, minced pork, black fungus and mushrooms and vegetables all adds up to a delicious bowl of noodle.

Regardless of the many variants of Pan Mee nowadays, I still believe that the traditional one is the best, hands down.

Overall, I would say that the Paramount Garden is a worthwhile place to go for Pan Mee. This restaurant is usually packed during lunch hours. Go there early if you want to find a seat.

Restoran Ah Or Chu Yuk Fun (Pork Noodle) @ Dataran Mentari, Sunway

20 11 2010

A while ago, I had a bowl of pork noodle at New Seaview and was unimpressed with the food there. With my insatiable hunger for pork noodles, I decided to dig around some food blogs for better alternatives. One of the names which came up in those blogs was Restoran Ah Or located at Dataran Mentari.

The auntie who operate this stall was very friendly. In fact, she doesn’t even mind that I took her picture up close. According to her, her family is running a string of popular pork noodle shops around Klang Valley. Hence, it was no surprise that the popularity of their pork noodle was evident from the number of people eating at her shop during lunch hours.

The pork noodle was seen cooking inside a big hot pot.

A good yardstick to determine how good a bowl of pork noodle is the soup. Here, the soup was really tasty and full of porky taste. It was sweet and flavoursome. Even my colleagues agreed with me hands down.

I always like my pork noodle (RM 5.70) to be cooked with Hor Fun as the noodle is smooth and soft.

Customers have a choice to to add an egg into their pork noodle which costs RM 1 extra.

Intestine and pork meat are vital ingredients that give the ‘ummph’ in a bowl of pork noodle.

The inclusion of a huge chunk of pork was a bonus. It was certainly the biggest chunk of meat I had for a bowl of pork noodle.

Overall, I would highly recommend this place. Not only was the food delicious, the restaurant was also clean (albeit a bit hot due to the scorching afternoon weather). If you love pork noodle, you will enjoy the food here. Although it is more expensive than the pork noodle at Restoran Ten-Tien Fatt, the taste was certainly on par with it.

I had a quick lunch at Heaven Cafe and ordered the chicken omelette rice (RM 8.90) which comes in two variants, namely the sesame dressing and also Teriyaki sauce. Chicken omelette rice is basically butter rice wrapped with a layer of egg with slices of chicken on top. Here are the pictures taken.

Restoran Meng Kee Char Siew @ Glenmarie

9 11 2010

The last time I wrote about Meng Kee Char Siew was when I had their Wantan noodles for breakfast. Since I was there early, I did not get a chance to try their famous Char Siew (barbecued pork) rice which was only served at 9 a.m. onwards. Although I had subsequently visited this restaurant to eat their Char Siew rice, I had never made it a point to bring my camera along. Hence, it was my lucky day when my colleagues dropped by at Meng Kee for lunch while I was carrying my gears. What made it even better was an empty table for us to sit at minutes before scores of customers started pouring in.

We ordered a plate of roast chicken for two person (RM 9) and Char Siew for four person (RM 22). The roast chicken was nothing to shout about.

I still hold my opinion that their chicken was only run-of-the-mill ever since I tried it the very first time.

I always had this thought that if their roast chicken is as good as Kie Kee Chicken Rice, it would be a heaven come true for food lovers!

Their Char Siew was a different story altogether. Succulent, tasty and flavoursome.

This is one of the best Char Siew you can find around town.

The Char Siew at Meng Kee are skillfully roasted. The colours were deep amber red (with a slight burnt texture) that looks really appetizing. The meat were very tender as well.

There are some differing opinions on which restaurant serves the best Char Siew in Klang Valley. Some say Meng Kee is the best but I tend to like Famous Seremban Favourites at Aman Suria better.

That is not to say that Meng Kee Char Siew is no good. You won’t go wrong eating at Meng Kee. Just a word of caution. The place is awfully crowded during lunch hours. Go there early to get a place to sit.
