MonsterBites @ Jaya One, Petaling Jaya

19 03 2011

I had a chance to try out the sandwich at MonsterBite recently. Monster Bite is a little kiosk located next to entrance of Cold Storage at Jaya One. The kiosk is decorated with all sorts of cartoons presumably their mascot which attracted passerby to take a second look.

MonsterBites prides itself for serving healthy food which are equally delicious. True to its claim, I found their Monster Classico with Turkey Ham (RM 8.80) lived up to its reputation.

Honestly, I am not a big fan of sandwich but the Monster Classico got me hooked! The ingredients were fresh and appetizing. The sandwich reminds me of the goodness of a home made sandwich with plenty of yummy-ness inside.

If I want to go for a sandwich next time, I will definitely give MonsterBite a go.

Pizzeria Bella Italia @ SS2 Petaling Jaya

8 03 2011

Nowadays, it is pretty hard press to find value for money set lunch. Hence, when I found out that Pizzeria Bella Italia is offering their set meals from RM 9.90 onwards, I was more than eager to try it out. Pizzeria Bella Italia has been around in SS2 for a long time. The funny thing is that I never actually stepped into this restaurant until I was told that the food is really good there.

The Margarita pizza that came with the set meal was served on a round wooden board.

The thin crust (which is how a real pizza should be prepared) and the light toppings tasted really good.

The cheesy texture was more than enough to make me smile. For RM 9.90, this is one of the best lunch deal around.

The classic spaghetti was equally delicious. Cooked with olive and slice chilies , the meal was simply good.

And for the price (RM 9.90), there is really nothing that I can fault about it.

Each set meal came with a bowl of mushroom soup and a piece of bread. The soup tasted pretty decent and did not have the floury texture offered at some other restauraunts.

Pizzeria Bella Italia is one of those restaurant that offers great food at a cheap price. Truly a rare gem in the neighbourhood of Petaling Jaya.

Rojak Mustaffa @ Section 17, Petaling Jaya

18 02 2011

Anyone who has been staying in Section 17, Petaling Jaya would be familiar with Rojak Mustaffa. Located along Jalan 17/21, Rojak Mustaffa’s van is parked under the big tree opposite the morning market by noon everyday. As far as I can remember, this rojak stall has been around for ages and has attracted many loyal customers who are often seen sitting on the plastic chairs in front of the rojak van.

The stall was originally run by the boss himself but during my last visit there, it seems that his son has taken over the business. Judging from how quickly the ingredients were sliced on the chopping board, I would say that he is as experienced as his father, if not better. My packet of rojak was ready in less than 2 minutes.

Rojak Pasembur or rojak mamak consists of various ingredients such as floury cake, sliced cucumber, hard boiled egg, fried tofu, bean sprout and fried crackers.

One of the best thing I love about Rojak Mustaffa is the thick peanut sauce which has the right balance of spicy and sweet taste to it. Spread the peanut sauce all over the ingredients and mix them together for a plate of delicious meal!

Beside Rojak Sotong & telur (RM 5.00), they also serve Rojak Mee (RM 5.50), Rojak Telur (RM 4.00) and Rojak Sotong (RM 4.00). Business hour is from noon till around 4 p.m.

Sinfully Chocolate @ 3 Two Square, Petaling Jaya

14 01 2011

When I first heard of Sinfully Chocolate, I thought they would be selling, well, chocolates. So you can imagine how surprised I was when I was greeted with breads and pastries at the cafe instead. On top of that, Sinfully Chocolate were also serving food which comes in set lunch at the price of RM 9.90 each.

The Aglio Olio spaghetti was really tasty. There was a light yet tasty flavour to it.

I was never a fan of Aglio Olio until I tried this one. The finer strands of spaghetti (angle hair) tends to take in more flavour. The bacon was nicely cooked and goes well the the garlic and sundried tomatoes.

I also like the fact that they included some fresh salad and a potato bread.

Overall this is a definitely a thumbs up meal!

The Spaghetti Bolognese was equally good as well. The richness of the bolognese sauce was the number one reason why I really love it.

Minced chicken, diced tomatoes and a mixture of green and yellow pepper made this meal really tasty.

For RM 9.90, you can’t really go wrong with the food at Sinfully Chocolate. The portion is huge and the taste is great.

If you are looking for a great meal at a reasonable price, Sinfully Chocolate would fit the bill nicely. Two thumbs up.

Food Foundry @ Petaling Jaya

28 08 2010

Food Foundry has been in existence for a few years now. Tuck at the corner of Happy Mansion Apartment at Section 17, the place has generated quite a buzz when they introduced their Vanilla mille crêpe (RM 9.00) back then.

For those who doesn’t know, Mille crêpe is a type of french cake with ‘a thousand’ thin layers pancake. As a result, these individual layers provide a distinctive light and airy texture.

Simply put, this is one of the best cake I have eaten so far. You won’t find many places offering this sort of cake which makes it all the more reason to patronise Food Foundry.

Besides the dessert, Food Foundry some great tasting food too. Take the Mediterranean Chicken (RM 18.00) for example. Using natural herbs, the taste was surprisingly light in a good way. I guess this is where the freshness of the ingredients used play an important part. Suffice to say, this meal did not disappoint me at all.

The Pan Fried Dory Fish with Cream Sauce (RM 15.00) was another hearty meal. The fish was moist and nicely cooked.

The mashed potatoes was the real deal unlike those powdery type which some restaurant used.

Overall, it is a nice place to dine. The decorations are kept to a minimum but charming in its own ways.

Roti Canai @ Restoran Ravi’s

6 06 2010

I have blogged about the delicious Roti Canai at Restoran Ravi’s numerous times before. Simply put, their roti canai is one of the best I have tasted so far. The texture is soft and ‘airy’ as it is made fresh while the curry fish is spicy. One of my favourite Saturday morning breakfast meal.

Kie Kee Chicken Rice… again

29 01 2010

There are a lot of nice restaurant to eat around Petaling Jaya. Some places warrant a second visit, or even third. However, in the case of Kie Kee chicken rice shop at PJ Old Town Food Court, I have lost count with how many times I have been there.

Perhaps what makes their chicken rice special is the tenderness of the chicken meat. Also, their black gravy sauce is very flavoursome which contribute to the overall taste.

I have also blogged about the yummy ice kacang sold by Weng Kee which is just a few shops away.

The richness of the gula melaka and coconut milk is a killer combination which makes the dessert so irresistible.

Cendol is served in tall glass while ABC ice kacang is served using a bowl.

Candid shot

I took this candid shot while waiting for our food to arrive at Kei Kei Chicken Rice shop. It has been a while since I took pictures of my other half so here is my favourite one below.

Ninja Joe @ Tropicana City Mall

2 12 2009

I am always fascinated with the mysterious nature Ninja. Dressing in full black suit with their face covered, they thread stealthily in the shadows, assassinating their targets with katana or shuriken.  So when I saw this new shop at Tropicana City Mall called Ninja Joe, I promptly walked in to check out what the buzz is all about.

Apparently, Ninja Joe is a new fast food chain which serves pork burger. I can only recall another fast food chain from Japan called Mos Burger in KLCC that serves pork fillet burger but has since closed down. Anyway, Ninja Joe offers six varieties of their mini pork burger namely, Original, Teriyaki, Spicy, Black pepper, Oriental and Sweet and Sour.

All the burgers do look alike except for the gravy which they used to define the choice of flavour. Each burger costs RM 5.95 (solo burger) but you can also buy it in a set of 2 burgers (RM 9.95), 3 burgers (RM 12.95) or 6 ninjas (RM 24.95).

Apart from that, they even have a wacky offer whereby if the customer name is Joe, he or she gets RM 1 discount.

The fillet was very tasty. It kinda of reminded me of dried meat that we usually eat during Chinese New Year.

According to their twitter page, the burgers are 100% free from MSG, flavouring and preservatives.

Besides the burgers, they also serve pork nuggets in the shape of Shuriken. Quite cute I must say.

Here is their Twitter page.

Hailam Kopitiam @ 3 Two Square

9 11 2009

There are certainly no shortage of modernised ‘kopitiams’ or coffee shop around town. Hailam Kopitiam is the latest addition to the rising trend of coffee shops mushrooming everywhere.

DSC_2703

I took the opportunity to drop by for lunch with my friends last Saturday to see how good the food was. According to their menu, the outlet is own by the Goh family which has spanned over three generations since the colonial times, which was frequented by the British. Apparently, their coffee retains the original flavour of the original Hainanese taste.

After reading their menu, I have decided to try out their ‘Kopi Cham’. ‘Cham’ means mixed in English and the drink came with the concoction coffee, tea, sugar and milk. As a touch of authenticity, it was served with the Chinese coffee shop cup which was used since many years ago to serve hot drinks. The taste was quite good with rich aroma of coffee flavour in it. I liked it a lot and ordered another cup after that.

As for the food, the Hailam Spicy Fried Rice with Prawns (RM 7.20) came highly recommended according to their menu. So I thought it would be a good idea to try it out. It was certainly spicy but bearable. The taste was undeniably hot and leaves you wanting some cold water. Despite that, I like it a lot and wouldn’t mind to have this again.

DSC_2679

One of my friend took the Hailam Fried Mee Hoon (RM 6.80). Despite having the impression that the noodles was fried when we read the menu, it actually came with thick dark gravy akin to Lum Mee. It was pretty good too.

DSC_2694

And here is a picture of the Tom Yam Mee Hoon. It was fried with Tom Yam paste (I presume) and have a tinge of sour and spicy taste to it. There were slices of fish cakes, prawns and tomatoes which came with the dish. My friend was pretty happy with it.

Overall, it is a good place to go for some nice tasty food. I reckon that the food quality is on par or even better than some of the other similar restaurant that I have tried.
