Yeoh’s Bah Kut Teh @ Klang

Mention the word Bak Kut Teh and images of aromatic medicinal soup prepared with a concoction of herbs and spices with chunky meats spring into my mind. While many food lovers will tend to have their favourite Bak Kut Teh shop (including yours truly), my good friend, Yeong recommended me to try out Yeoh’s Bah Kut Teh at Klang. On the side note, I always thought the proper spelling for this dish is Bak Kut Teh but somehow Yeoh’s version is spelt differently.

Apparently, Yeoh’s Bah Kut Teh is located just at the back of the Hokkien Association Building along Jalan Batu Tiga Lama which makes it very inconspicuous to motorists traveling along the Federal Highway. Still, I was told by my friend that they are very famous among the locals and even have a branch in Hong Kong.

Putting fame aside, I was keen to see how good the Bak Kut Teh is at this place. The staff recommended us to try their Yeoh’s Signature Big Bone and Claypot Bah Kut Teh. Yeoh’s Signature Big Bone deserves a special mention. The first thing that struck me was how HUGE the bone of meat was.

It was so big that I could almost picture it as Titanic sinking into the sea of herbal soup. Putting my silly comparison aside, the meat was soft, tender and flavoursome.

One of the pre-requisite for me in tasting Bak Kut Teh is the soup itself. To tell the truth, I did not fall in love with the soup on my first sip. It was certainly thick, rich and full of herbal taste but somehow, the flavour was a wee bit bitter for me. Perhaps my taste buds were off tangent that afternoon but it certainly did not knock me off my socks.

However, as our lunch discussion went on, I was unconsciously taking spoonfuls of the soup to drink. Strangely, the taste became better! I somehow appreciate the thicker texture of the soup with rich content of herbs.

The claypot Bah Kut Teh was also yummy. Apart from a mixture of fat and lean meat, there were tau fu pock, cabbage, fu chok and etc.

The soup has a slightly different taste. It was less bitter and not as thick with herbs as compared to the Signature Big Bone.

There was also a slight tinge of sweetness. As for the meat, it was also nicely cook. No complaints there.

I read somewhere that there are almost 500 different Bak Kut Teh shops/stalls in Klang alone. This will invariably produces different version of the traditional dish which in turn will divide people’s opinion on which shop is the best. As for me, Yeoh’s would ranked among the top tier of Bak Kut Teh shops I have sampled so far.

For a meal of RM 31.00 inclusive of Chinese tea, I would say it was certainly worth the price of the meal.

from the lady-boss, she also mentioned the “stewed pork feet(hand)” as well as the “pork stomach slices” are also their popular dishes.

let’s go and try it out. hehehe… BKT boleh!
